MVA Hosts First Domestic Violence Mock Trial CLE

February 2012

Moore & Van Allen’s Charlotte office transformed conference space into a courtroom in order to host the first Domestic Violence Mock Trial CLE on February 22, 2012.  The trial was designed to introduce attorneys to pro bono work in the domestic courtroom, and also to support the Firm’s Domestic Violence Pro Bono Project.  The Project involves a partnership with Safe Alliance (formerly United Family Services) to provide victims of domestic abuse with effective legal counsel.

The high-drama CLE was both entertaining and practical.  Attendees received step by step instructions on how to effectively manage a domestic matter in civil court.  Safe Alliance Director of Legal Advocacy & Managing Attorney Laura Lawrence served as trial “judge.”  Firm trial participants included Litigation Member Larry Gwaltney, Litigation Attorneys Mindy Vervais and Cabell Clay, and Network Engineer Jon Littlepage.  Presenters reiterated that new pro bono counsel work alongside seasoned volunteers would help to better acclimate them to the court process.
