Citizen Schools Plans Celebration of Volunteers at MVA

Citizen Schools joins with Moore & Van Allen to recognize, congratulate and thank volunteers with a Citizen Teacher Social

Citizen Schools wants to say “thanks” in a big way, with its annual Citizen Teacher Social for Citizen Teachers at Moore & Van Allen’s Uptown Charlotte office on May 14.  Citizen Teachers represent a diverse group of business sectors from across the Charlotte region, including financial, legal, retail, energy and technology.  Citizen Schools will also be celebrating the hard work of the four AmeriCorps Teaching Fellows who work at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School campus in Charlotte.

The success of Citizen Schools’ expanded learning time programs would not be possible without volunteer Citizen Teachers, who generously give one afternoon each week for 10 weeks to lead apprenticeships, classes that connect what students learn during the traditional school day with real-world relevant learning in the fields of STEM, finance, architecture, the arts, media, law and various other topics.  Apprenticeships culminate in a WOW! – the product, presentation, or performance demonstrating what students have learned during their apprenticeships.

“Citizen Schools brings experiences to the students that they would not otherwise receive.  In turn, the group not only provides students with productive ways to spend their time, but is also training the workforce of tomorrow.  Their equation is a winning model for students, schools, businesses, and ultimately the Charlotte community and economy as a whole,” stated Citizen Schools North Carolina Advisory Board Chair and Moore & Van Allen Member John Gilson.
