South Carolina General Assembly 

Annual Appropriations Bills

The House Ways and Means Committee introduced the annual appropriations bill, H.4701, and the capital reserve fund bill, H.4702, last week for the members’ review.  The full House will begin debate on the annual appropriations bills today at 1:00 pm.

Nullification Bill

Debate began last week on H.3101, a bill that would curb the federal Affordable Care Act in South Carolina. Read more here.

Bill allowing electronic proof-of-insurance on Haley's desk

A bill sponsored by state Rep. Todd Atwater, R-Lexington, authorizing drivers to show proof of insurance on their smartphone is before Governor Haley for her review. Read more here.

Electronic Waste Recycling

Governor Haley approved H.3847 last week.  The act clarifies definitions, establishes a short-term solution to address the CRT situation facing local governments, and creates a long-term solution for implementing a shared responsibility recycling program under industry leadership and in partnership with South Carolina local governments and DHEC.

SC Marine vet set to get Medal of Honor

William Kyle Carpenter, a Marine Corps veteran from Gilbert who was severely wounded in 2010 while fighting in Afghanistan, will receive the Medal of Honor, the nation's top award for valor, according to a report in Marine Corps Times. He would be the third Marine to receive the Medal of Honor from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the first South Carolinian to receive the decoration since the Vietnam War. 

Haley: Employment growing faster than population

Gov. Nikki Haley's administration touted Monday that South Carolina's employment reached an all-time high in December, but its release didn't take into account the state's growing population.  Read more here.

Bill Clinton to visit Greenville next month

Former President Bill Clinton is scheduled tentatively to come to Greenville next month to speak at an event for the Furman University's Riley Institute, former Gov. Dick Riley said Monday. Riley said he does not expect Clinton to make any other stops in South Carolina. Clinton is slated to appear at 7 p.m. April 8 at The Peace Center, Riley said. Read more here.
