Team leader of the Litigation practice group and co-managing member of the MVA Charlotte office, Greg Murphy represents a broad base of business clients in jury and non-jury trials, arbitrations and other forms of alternative dispute resolution.

His commercial litigation practice focuses on:

Mr. Murphy has represented clients in matters in more than 15 states, and has been admitted to practice in all state and federal district courts in North Carolina; the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Fourth, Sixth, Eleventh, and Federal Circuits; and the United States Supreme Court. 

Representative Cases:

  • Heilig Meyers Company v. Wachovia N.A. et al.  3:05 CV250-JRS (2005).  Successfully defended at trial and on appeal $200 million bankruptcy preference action.
  • iEntertainment Network, Inc., v. Epic Games, Inc. et al.  5:04-CV-647-00 (E.D.N.C. 2004).  Successfully defended and represented Epic Games, Atari and Midway Games in patent infringement action.
  • Nippon Carbon Co., Ltd. v. Nucor Corporation, 01-CV-726 (D. Del. 2001).  Successfully defended leading U.S. Steel Company against allegations of patent infringement.
  • Great Lakes Chemical Corp. v. Archimica SPA, 99-CV-728 (D. Del. 2001).  Obtained successful jury verdict on behalf of an Italian manufacturer of pharmaceutical intermediates against allegations of patent infringement.
  • Energy Investors Fund, L.P. v. Metric Constructors, Inc., 351 N.C. 331, 525 S.E. 2d 441 (1999).  Defended a general contractor from direct liability by a limited partner in connection with a $60 million energy facility.
  • Horack v. Southern Real Estate, 563, S.E. 2d 47 ( N.C. Ct App. 2002).  Defended at trial and on appeal a commercial real estate firm and broker in connection with allegations of unfair and deceptive trade practices and fraud.
  • NationsBank v. Eubank Farms, 122 N.C. App. 576, 472 S.E. 2d 230 (1996).  Represented national bank in lender liability suit against borrowers.
  • Sancap Abrasives Corp. v. Swiss Industrial Abrasives Group, 68 F.Supp. 2d 853 (N.D. Ohio 1999); aff’d, 2001 U.S. App. LEXIS 18937 (Sixth Circuit 2001).  Obtained summary judgment for the defendant on all issues in connection with an alleged antitrust conspiracy to restrain trade in the industrial abrasives industry.
  • Norfolk Southern Railway Company v. Clariant Corporation, 00-CV-231 (E.D. KY 2003).  Represented and defended at trial a multinational chemical company in connection with environmental and property damage claims arising from a railcar fire and subsequent evacuation of an adjacent population and businesses.
  • NationsBank v. Laurel Oaks Properties, 91-CVS-4321 (1993).  Defended national banking association in jury trial on counter claims for fraud and unfair and deceptive trade practices.
  • NationsBank v. Cary Properties C-C-91-234-P (1994).  Obtained bench trial verdict against borrowers and guarantors after successful motion for partial summary judgment.
