MVA Hosts 50B Order Mock Consent Negotiation CLE

February 2013

Moore & Van Allen's Charlotte office transformed conference space into a courtroom in order to host the first 50B Order Mock Consent Negotiation CLE on February 27, 2013.  The program served as follow-up to the 2012 Domestic Violence Mock Trial CLE, and was planned in support of the Firm’s award-winning Domestic Violence Pro Bono Project.  The Project involves a partnership with Safe Alliance to provide victims of domestic abuse with effective legal counsel.

The purpose of the mock consent negotiation CLE was to supplement previous traditional trainings and bridge the gap for non-litigators from trainings to the actual courtroom and the transactional style of consent order negotiations.  The goal was provide attorneys interested in learning how to handle domestic violence cases with a realistic look at the process from start to finish.

Safe Alliance Director of Legal Advocacy & Managing Attorney Laura Lawrence served as trial “judge.”  Firm presenters and trial participants includedLitigationMember Brain Heslin and Litigation attorneys Mindy Vervais and Cabell Clay.  Attendees witnessed client consultation, courtroom calendar call, consent order discussion between opposing counsel, and plaintiff’s counsel attempt to enter the order and the defendant’s response to the Judge.
