Prof. Jacoby is the Graham Kenan Professor of Law at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Luis shared (virtually) with Prof. Jacoby’s second and third-year law students his insights into the application of secured transactions concepts in every day practice and his experiences in the world of distressed debt.

Charlotte Estate & Wealth Planning Associate Caitlin Horne presented at the ABA 32nd Annual RPTE National CLE Conference, The Virtual Experience 2020 on May 14. Horne joined the virtual panel discussion for the topic “Tax Planning for Closely-Held Business Interests Before a Liquidity Event.” This presentation discussed a range of tax planning strategies to raise with clients before a sale or IPO of a closely-held business.

Charlotte Litigation Member Cabell Clay served as a moderator as part of the American Bar Association Young Lawyers Division Spring Conference in Washington, D.C. on May 2. Clay moderated the panel titled: “Effecting Change Behind the Scenes: Insight into the role of a Hill Staffer.” During the Panel, four Capitol Hill Staffers provided insights into their daily activities, engagements with other members of Congress, policy-setting powers, and use of their legal training in their roles.

MVA hosted Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC) Program
(February 2020)

MVA hosted the Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC) program on February 13 titled, "Mischief Managed: Best Practices in Developing a Crisis Response Program". Charlotte Privacy & Data Security Members Karin McGinnis and Todd Taylor joined other legal and industry experts to present the best practices in both (a) the development of a cyber/data security crisis response program, and (b) implementing that program when faced with a cyber/data security incident. This event discussed the processes to be followed when conducting a digital forensics investigation in the wake of a cybersecurity incident and explored what constitutes a "crisis", how to develop a cyber/data security crisis response program and carry it out under pressure.

MVA was proud to host the Page One eDiscovery Roundtable event that was held on February 18. Charlotte Discovery Counsel Courtney Duncil helped facilitate the roundtable that was presented by Brian Kuklick, Senior eDiscovery Consultant with Page One. The discussion focused on the following topics: GDPR, Data Privacy, CCPA, privilege logs, comparison of eDiscovery platforms, technology assisted review, project management software and mitigating costs associated with third party subpoenas.

Charlotte Bankruptcy & Restructuring Member and Team Leader Zachary Smith has been appointed Co-Chair of the American Bankruptcy Institute’s annual Caribbean Insolvency Symposium, held in San Juan, Puerto Rico, February 3-5. The conference is the largest such event in the Caribbean and is returning to Puerto Rico for the first time since Hurricanes Maria and Irma in 2017. At the conference, Charlotte Bankruptcy & Restructuring Member Luis Lluberas will speak on a panel entitled Chapter 11: Practical Skills and Case Law Update together with Puerto Rico’s leading restructuring attorneys and moderated by Honorable Enrique S. Lamoutte, United States Bankruptcy Judge for the District of Puerto Rico.

Charlotte Litigation Member Cabell Clay was invited to serve as a moderator and speaker for the panel titled “How to Keep Your Workforce Happy” at the International Association of Young Lawyers (AIJA)’s Annual Labour Law Conference which was held on October 26 in Lisbon, Portugal. Clay focused on US laws for addressing mental health and stress in the workplace as well as prevention techniques.
