South Carolina General Assembly 

Ethics Reform

The Senate gave third reading to H. 3945 late Thursday.  The latest version of the ethics reform legislation provides for public officials to disclose sources of income, defines “consultants” and requires reporting and prohibitions, educational requirements for public officials and lobbyists, and the elimination of leadership political action committees.  Read more here.

Pollution Control Act

The House approved clarifications to the Pollution Control Act in H. 3925.  Specifically, the bill clarifies the parties that may petition regarding a violation of the Act and the applicability of the savings clause of Act 198 of 2012.

Prescription Monitoring

Legislation, S. 840,  enhancing the State’s prescription monitoring program was adopted by the Senate this week and referred to the House Judiciary Committee.

Proposed Defense cuts would hit SC

S.C. politicians slammed the budget and personnel cuts U.S. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel proposed Monday. The cuts could hit some S.C. military bases, including Columbia's Fort Jackson, while protecting others. Hagel recommended shrinking the Army to its smallest size since before World War II, which could scale back operations in training facilities including Fort Jackson. Read more here

Program to find veteran jobs grows

A program that has slashed unemployment to less than 4 percent from 16 percent in 2011 among S.C. National Guard members is being expanded statewide. Called Operation Palmetto Employment, the program would help troops of all branches leaving military service find jobs in the state. But it also would supply businesses, large and small, with dependable, trainable, drug-free and dedicated workers, Gov. Nikki Haley said. Read more here.
