Reminder: Federal Minimum Wage Changes

Federal Minimum Wage Increase goes into Effect Today (7/24/09)
MVA Employment & Labor Team
Employment Alert
July 24, 2009

On Friday, July 24, 2009 the Federal Minimum wage increases to $7.25 per hour.  This is the final of three scheduled increases to the minimum wage as a result of legislation passed in 2007.  All workers covered by the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) must be paid at least $7.25 per hour for all work as of Friday, June 24.

Employers should note that this change affects workers in many states and in the District of Columbia because employers must pay employees covered by the FLSA the higher of the Federal or state minimum wage rates.  Some states link their minimum wage rate to the Federal minimum wage so please confirm your state's minimum wage to ensure compliance with the correct minimum wage.

If you have any questions about the new minimum wage or the FLSA please contacts a member of Moore & Van Allen's Employment team.
