The attorneys at Moore & Van Allen recognize that energy is the backbone of the economy, particularly in Charlotte, where a growing number of energy initiatives have put the city on the fast track to becoming one of the nation’s energy hubs.  One of these initiatives, the energy-focused local incubator CLT Joules, has the Firm fully charged.

MVA is excited to announce its full-fledged support for CLT Joules and its mission to promote energy innovation and entrepreneurs. Led by newly-dubbed Executive Director Lori Collins, the organization facilitates the development of innovative energy businesses by providing the infrastructure for them to thrive, including a community for early stage companies, a space where they can learn, tools to accelerate growth, and connections to the big players in the energy ecosystem of Charlotte.

“This is exactly the type of enterprise that Charlotte needs, and we are honored and thrilled to be involved from the onset,” stated MVA Energy and Litigation Member Brian Heslin.  “The Firm wholeheartedly supports local small businesses, especially those that will further develop Charlotte’s presence in the energy playing field.”

MVA has committed to a three-year partnership with CLT Joules, which includes a financial donation as well as ongoing pro bono services.  MVA Intellectual Property Associate Patrick Horne will serve as the Firm’s point person for pro bono efforts, and will assess legal needs and place cases as they come through.

“Charlotte is a recognized hub for energy and a growing center for innovation and entrepreneurship.  CLT Joules blends the two and provides a wonderful opportunity for entrepreneurs to grow their energy start-ups with expert guidance,” said Horne.  “We look forward to providing business-minded legal advice to help these entrepreneurs get off to a great start.”

There are two companies currently evolving under CLT Joules’ wing:  Amergy Energy and Stark Power.  Even better are their success stories.  Amergy Energy is developing technologies to improve the efficiency of solar cells by up to 30%.  Stark Power provides energy storage and engine starting solutions for consumer, industrial and specialty applications and has gained early traction in the market.

In addition to Collins’ director appointment, CLT Joules launched a new website, cltjoules.com, and is now poised to accept applications from interested entrepreneurs for the 2014 program.
