MVA Serves as Amicus Counsel for Cato Institute in Sixth Amendment Case Before U.S. Supreme Court
The Cato Institute—a non-partisan public policy foundation dedicated to liberty, free markets, and limited government—engaged Moore & Van Allen to serve as amicus counsel in a significant Sixth Amendment case at the petition stage before the U.S. Supreme Court. The case centers on the standard of proof that applies when a criminal defendant seeks recourse after learning that federal prosecutors intentionally listened to his attorney-client calls about legal strategy and trial preparation. The issue concerns defendants’ fundamental Sixth Amendment right to counsel when charged with a crime. MVA’s Fielding Huseth and Melissa Veronda led the writing of the Cato Institute’s amicus brief, and James McLoughlin has provided strategic guidance. MVA filed the brief with the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday, May 19.
