McGinnis Covers Legalities of Video Surveillance

Employment Alert
02.2012

Charlotte Member Karin McGinnis was quoted in Employment Alert on February 23.  The article, “Video Surveillance:  Stay on the Right Side of the Law," provides readers with guidelines for how employers can protect themselves under federal and state laws when utilizing video surveillance in the workplace.

"In general, McGinnis says, employers have the right to use video surveillance as long as they do not conduct it in areas where employees have a reasonable expectation of privacy, such as bathrooms and locker rooms.  They also have to make sure video surveillance is not prevented under the terms of any labor agreement that have signed."
