Member Sarah Byrne has authored an article published by The National Crime Victim Law Institute (NCVLI) titled, “Financial Wellness as a Crime Victim’s Right: Survivors of sexual exploitation deserve compensation for their losses, and the protection and prosperity that follow."

In the article, Byrne explores the significant financial impacts associated with crimes including child sexual abuse, child sexual abuse material and sex trafficking, as well as the legal avenues available to survivors seeking compensation. She discusses criminal restitution, civil remedies, and victims’ compensation funds, while also examining the financial challenges survivors may face after receiving compensation.

Byrne further addresses the importance of financial wellness beyond recovery itself, including credit repair, access to safe banking and financial services, tax considerations, financial planning and financial literacy. Together, these tools can help survivors move toward greater financial stability and independence.

Through her practice, Byrne provides pro bono representation to survivors of sex trafficking, forced labor and child sexual abuse and advises organizations working to combat these crimes. Her work also focuses on the intersection of human trafficking and the financial sector, including efforts to increase survivors’ access to financial freedom.
