First Congressional District – Special Election
The Special Election Primary for South Carolina’s First Congressional District was held today and will head to a run-off to determine the nominee for the Republicans. Elizabeth Colbert-Bush cruised to victory Tuesday night beating perennial candidate Ben Frasier by a margin of 95.6% to 4.1%.
On the Republican side, former Governor Mark Sanford secured his spot in the run-off finishing first among 16 Republicans vying for a chance to replace newly appointed Senator Tim Scott. Sanford finished with 36.9% of the vote. If no candidate receives over 50%, the top two candidates will face in off in two weeks.
In the race to see who will face Sanford, Curtis Bostic and State Senator Larry Grooms are close enough to trigger a recount to determine who will challenge Sanford at the time of this publication. The run-off date is not affected by the recount and will be held on April 2. The General Election will be held on May 7, 2013.
