Gary English, a former U.S. Navy Surface Warfare Officer, focuses his practice on admiralty, maritime, and cross-border commercial matters. He represents global clients in all facades of international shipping and the international multi-model transportation sectors. In addition to his 20 years with the Navy, he served for a decade as an in-house maritime attorney for Maersk Line, Limited.

Overview

Gary leverages his many years of in-house experience and Naval service and seamanship to astutely advise his clients on the rapidly evolving international trade landscape, compliance, sanctions, and a multitude of maritime matters. His career is marked by successes in renewable energy projects, personal injury, wrongful death, hull and machinery, cargo, environmental, regulatory compliance, aerospace, Law of the Sea, and piracy. Further, Gary has robust and trusted experience advising on all sectors of intermodal transportation and matters concerning international vessel sales, registration, recycling, and vessels held in trust.

  • Joyce v. Maersk Line, Limited, 876 F.3d 502 (3rd Cir. 2017). (the 3rd Circuit sitting en banc overturned 27 years of 3rd Circuit precedence)
  • Hoblick v United States, 526 F.Supp.3d 130 (DSC 2021) (Suits in Admiralty Act/Public Vessel Act dismissed for lack of subject matter jurisdiction)
  • Seville v Maersk Line, Ltd., 53 F.4th 890 (5th Cir. 2022) (dismissed on lack of personal jurisdiction)
  • Reed v. Maersk Line, Ltd., 2023 U.S. Dist. LEXIS (SD Tx. Jan. 5, 2023) (vessel did not create an unsafe wake in a wrongful death matter within TX state territorial waters).
  • Negotiated, drafted, and ensured compliance with U.S. government regulatory schemes for the international sale of assets in excess of $100 million per year.
  • Served on the senior management negotiating team for collective bargaining agreements with the following unions: Marine Engineers’ Beneficial Association; American Maritime Officers; International Organization of Masters, Mates & Pilots; and Seafarers International Union.
  • Formed a Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment (SASH) working group that overhauled anti-SASH, harassment and bullying policies, and investigation procedures.
  • Served as a leading member of a client’s corporate crisis response team, coordinating legal and media responses.
  • Coordinated the reflagging of 22 vessels for either purchase or sale in Singapore or recycling in either Aliaga-Izmir, Turkey or Jiangsu, China.
